Time is a gift. The culture talk of the day is about time and who has the right to give and take time from a person before their birth. Time will end but eternity will not. A person who does not submit to Christ at this time will be separated from God for eternity in hell. Time and the choices in time matter. Yet, with all the significance of time it amazes me how much time is often summed up in one line in scripture. Hundreds of years of life, sufferings, joys, victories, and defeats all covered with a passing sentence. This summation of time in scripture could encourage or discourage you. One day all of your life will be summed up in a sentence and truthfully much of it already is, "They worked there for 27 years" or "They lived there for 40 years." A statement is made and time moves on and no word of all the burdens or blessings of those years are mentioned. Ecclesiastes addresses this reality. Why does God often talk of years of time in just one line? I can think of at least two reasons. Time is God's to use. "...What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes. Instead you ought to say, "If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that." (James 4:14-17) Second, eternity is where God wants us to look. So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal. (2 Corinthians 4:16-18). Psalm 31 reminds us that our times are in God's hand. Take that truth as a reminder to use your time for God's glory not for your personal gain. You have one line of time, how will you use it? HOPE IN GOD
